FAQ

What’s the difference between the Opensphere product and the Opensphere Message Detector.

I installed a new version of Opensphere Message Detector but predefined message listener definitions (Tibco Rendezvous and JMS) that were made in the previous version are no longer available. How can I get them back?

I’m running Opensphere Message Detector with a JMS “>” topic listener and can see different entries within the “Topic Summary” view. When I double click on a row where the “Msg Count” is far over 100, the message editor shows only 10 messages. Is this a bug?

When I create a message filter in the ???, a black bar with a red line appears at the bottom of the Opensphere Message Detector. What is this used for?

How can I zoom into a particular area of the message timeline chart?

ANSWERS

What’s the difference between the Opensphere product and the Opensphere Message Detector.

Opensphere is a comprehensive testing framework that lets you interact with JMS, Tibco Rendezvous™, web services, databases etc. The Opensphere product fully contains the Opensphere Message Detector.

The Opensphere Message Detector is used to capture JMS and Tibco Rendezvous messages on the fly, to record and reply to them in an easy way. The standalone Opensphere Message Detector program is available free of charge.

Copy the following files from the ‘bin’ folder of the old Opensphere Message Detector version to the ‘bin’ folder of the newly installed version and restart the program:

  • rvListenerDef.properties
  • jmsTopicListenerDef.properties
  • jmsQueueBrowserDef.properties

This is not a bug! The “Msg Count” column reports the total number of messages that were detected on a particular topic. An additional column shows the message buffer size and its current filling degree. In order to prevent high memory consumption when lots of different topics are detected, the default buffer size is set to 10.

The message editor only shows the messages that are currently in this buffer. The overall message buffer size can be changed (message detecting must be stopped) by selecting the appropriate entry from the combo box located top right in the tool bar.

When I create a message filter in the ???, a black bar with a red line appears at the bottom of the Opensphere Message Detector. What is this used for?

The Message Detector shows a chart on its bottom whenever one or several message filters are defined. On that chart a message timeline appears for every defined filter. A message timeline shows filtered messages in their chronological context through a small item. If you simply see a steady line with no particular items, no messages have been detected so far that comply with a given filter.

How can I zoom into a particular area of the message timeline chart?

Place the mouse pointer at the top left corner of the desired zoom area and press the left mouse button. Move the mouse pointer to the bottom right corner of the desired zoom area and release the mouse button. In order to reset the initial display, press the left mouse button while placed on the chart and shortly move it top left before you release the button again.
